Last week, I read through 1 & 2 Timothy. This week I'm chewing on 1 & 2 Peter. I realized something about myself while reading these letters. I like to read out loud. (Do you ever do that? I'm so weird.) I stopped reading to my office walls when I got to 2nd Peter chapter 3 verse 11. The apostle Peter shares in the previous verse about how everything will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire. Verse 11 then asks, "Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?"
(Whoa...that question 'bout knocked me out of my office chair.)
Peter encourages us to live holy and godly lives. What does this mean? I think it partly means we should store up for ourselves things that will last, not stockpile earthly possessions. (Shoot...I guess I really don't need that big screen tv.) Love will last. I also believe serving the needs of others will be of lasting value.
My family has been shown a lot of love and we've been served by so many of you. God blessed us with a working furnace. A person put us before himself. That's service in it's truest essence, baby!
I've also been blessed with a friend who has served me, you, and this ministry by setting us up with this sweet web-site blog. He is always there to listen to me whine and answer my computer questions and pray for me and treat me to spicy buffalo wings. (I know what you're thinking. Don't worry. Wings will last. There's just gotta' be a buffalo wing tree in heaven.)
I read on one of my favorite blogs this morning about how he is designating today as: "Brag on Your Friend Day."
Thinking about all of our dear friends who've shown a Christ-like attitude of love and service to my family made me think that I should copy this "Brag on Your Friend Day" idea and apply it to these e-news updates. (I'm stealing his idea.)
Bragging is frowned upon when it is done in a selfish manner. But I think it would be okay to brag for a moment over the acts of love and service done in Jesus' name. After all, those actions will last for all eternity. So, today is: Brag on Your Friend Day!
Take a moment to share in the box below how a person put you before himself/herself. This isn't a chance for you to toot your own horn. This is an opportunity for you to toot Jesus' horn by sharing how He moved someone to love and serve you. This is an all-skate, and you don't have to name names. I'll start:
1. Friends of ours did an act of service for us by giving us a Marathon gas card. Thank you Jesus for these gas-card-giving-friends!
